Contamination OCD

It looks like a fear of germs. Underneath, it’s often a fear of never being able to get clean: of a threat that spreads, lingers, and can’t quite be washed away.

More than germs

Contamination OCD can centre on dirt, illness, bodily fluids, or chemicals, but it can also be less tangible: a feeling of being contaminated by a person, a place, a memory, or even an idea. What ties it together is the sense of a threat that transfers and won’t come off.

Contamination OCD

Contamination OCD is about more than germs.

The fear can involve physical contamination or a sense of contamination that feels less tangible.

The compulsions

To feel safe, you might wash or clean far past reason, change or discard clothes, avoid “contaminated” places and people, or perform elaborate routines to decontaminate. The relief never quite lasts, and the circle of what feels “safe” keeps shrinking.

How we help

ERP for contamination fears means gradually and deliberately making contact with what you’ve been avoiding, and then resisting the urge to wash, clean, or decontaminate. Step by step, your brain learns that the feared catastrophe doesn’t come, and the fear loses its hold. You set the pace; your therapist walks it with you.

You can live with a wider, freer circle again.
