Unwanted Intrusive Thoughts

Some of the most distressing OCD has no visible compulsions at all. The thoughts arrive uninvited: violent, sexual, blasphemous, or simply bizarre—and they horrify you. The very fact that they horrify you is the clearest sign of what’s really going on.

What “Pure O” actually is

“Purely Obsessional” OCD is a bit of a misnomer. The compulsions are still there; they’ve just gone underground. Instead of washing or checking, you replay the thought, analyze it, argue with it, seek reassurance, or scan how you feel to check whether it’s “true.” Those are compulsions too, and they feed the same loop.

The thoughts are not you

Intrusive thoughts in OCD are ego-dystonic they run directly against your values. That’s exactly why they cause so much distress. A thought is not a wish, an intention, or a hidden truth about your character.

Having it says nothing about who you are, except that you find it abhorrent, which is the whole point.

What It Can Look Like

Pure O can latch onto whatever matters most to you: your relationships, your morality, your sexuality, your faith, the safety of people you love. The theme is the disguise; the mechanism underneath is always the same.
