Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about therapy, fees, insurance, and what to expect at Cataraqui Counselling Clinic.

Psychotherapy is primarily a talk-based therapy and is intended to help people improve and maintain their mental health and well-being. Registered Psychotherapists work with individuals, couples and families in individual and group settings.

Psychotherapy occurs when the Registered Psychotherapist (RP) and client enter into a psychotherapeutic relationship where both work together to bring about positive change in the client's thinking, feeling, behaviour and social functioning. (CRPO, 2023)

Individual therapy sessions are 50–60 minutes and range from $155 to $180, depending on the practitioner. Couples and family therapy sessions range from $190 to $220.

We also offer affordable therapy through our supervised student intern program at $80 per session, with sliding-scale and pro bono spots available.

For a full breakdown, visit our services & sees page.

Psychotherapy services are not covered by OHIP, but many extended health insurance plans provide coverage for services offered by Registered Psychotherapists.

We do not offer direct billing. You will be provided with a receipt after each session that you can submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement.

Before your first session, we recommend asking your provider: Does your plan cover services by Registered Psychotherapists? What percentage is covered and up to what amount?

We do not offer crisis services. Please contact your local crisis or emergency department.

Our therapists have training in modalities that support the issues they treat. This may include: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Internal Family Systems (IFS-Informed), Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

If you're interested in a specific therapeutic approach, let us know — we'll be happy to match you with a therapist who uses that modality.

The free consultation is a brief phone call where you can share a bit about what brings you to therapy and ask any questions you have. It's a chance for us to understand your needs and help match you with the right therapist.

There's no pressure and no commitment — just a conversation to see if we're the right fit.

That's what the free consultation is for. We'll ask about what you're going through, what you're hoping to get out of therapy, and any preferences you have — then we'll recommend the therapist whose expertise and style are the best match.

You can also read about each therapist on our team page to get a sense of who you might connect with.

Yes. We offer both in-person sessions at our Kingston clinic (107-1020 Bayridge Drive) and virtual sessions for anyone located in Ontario.

That depends on your goals and what you're working through. Some clients benefit from short-term focused work (6–12 sessions), while others prefer ongoing support. Your therapist will discuss this with you and adjust as you go.

We understand that life happens. However, to respect both our clinicians' time and other clients waiting for appointments, cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice or missed appointments will be charged the full session fee.
